Say I'm working on my computer without turning it off and I insert a memory DIMM, I'm wearing sneakers and I'm not grounded.

I think the motherboard is not going to like, is not expeting any memory in a slot other than discovered in the boot time. Furthermore, I firmly believe that memory is lost in the operation due to the potential difference electric.
