Advice on keeping hair set?
While I can, for the most part, get my hair styled the way I want it (J-rock, aka Japanese Rock), it starts falling after a little bit, only remaining somewhat styled. I’m native american (Cherokee, Choktaw, and Incan) so I have rather thick, full bodied hair.
Process I normally go through and product I use:
-shampoo and condition every other day, usually using Naturelle slickline.
-towel dry
-apply GVP Leave in Treatment (Sebation Potion 9 compare)
-blow dry w/ Conair infiniti ionic dryer
-apply Redkin Smooth Down heat glide
-straighten w/ jilbre de Paris – Tourmaline flat iron (3/4″)
-apply Gatsby Moving Rubber (Grunge Matte, Air Rise, Loose Shuffle, or Wild Shake)
-straighten again, then reapply a little on the tips
-spray down with usually either Samy skyscraper hairspray or Beyond the Zone Frozen Stiff hair spray.
I usually don’t use alot of hair spray because I don’t want it to feel too stiff
you have an excellent product regimine, but its too heavy for J-rock styles. your hair will be very conditioned and healthy, but too silky and slippery to hold the set. leave-ins are great for damaged or frizzy hair, but not necessary if you have healthy hair and use the right styling products, they’ll protect your hair enough. try adding a volumising product before you blowdry, like matrix vavoom height of glam, or redken enamel gel, then blow dry. heat glide is great for very dry, frizzy or wiry hair, but its rather heavy and oily for most hair types. switch to a lighter thermal protecting spray. if you like redken, try spray starch, fabricate or hot sets. I like fabricate the best for what you would be using it for. iron your hair , but dont get right close to your scalp, leave an inch or 2 un-ironed, the un-ironed hair hair will give your style a base to build volume on. Im not familiar with the moving rubber, its probably fine, but i’ll give you options that would work from other product companies. shape trix from matrix. its a paste that dries into a lightweight, yet firm hold texture product *a personal fave*. Rough clay from redken, its a matte texture paste with a firm yet flexible hold, and is somewhat reworkable. tigi’s manipulator is also a great texture product. Dont be afraid to tease up the higher bits just a little bit, right down at the unironed root, reinforcing that base to build on. if your looking to hold up that height and want it to stay, you kind of need to use a bit more hairspray. im sure the ones you have are fine, but once again, ill suggest ones i know will work. try blast from joico. AMAZING stuff. if its too stiff, try half blast from the same maker. still an excellent product, but has a bit more elasticity to it so it isnt as hard as the regular blast. if your quick, you can use hairspray on the base. lift up your hair and expose the base whether its teased or not, and do very short blasts of hairspray. hold the can colse so you dont get it on the rest , and remember, because it is close, its quite concentrated, just be quick and youll be fine. hold up the hair untill the hairspray is dry, about a minute or so, or you can use the blowdryer on a cool setting to accellerate the drying process. I know it sounds like a lot, but there isnt much wrong with what your doing, im just really wordy. so in a nut shell: switch to lighter products, skip ironing the roots, dont forget about teasing, and dont be afraid of hairspray. I know products are expensive and not every one can fork out the cash to get an entire new regimine. Your products are great…. for super silky, sleek, flat hair. we’re looking for something a little more fun. try the styling tips with your products before you go out and splurge on all these new products, it may do the trick, if not, maybe just switch over when you run out of your stuff to see if it works a bit better for you.
