I can send chills down my spine on command. Is this rare? Is there a name for this ability?
I’ve been able to do this for as long as I can remember. I just recently got in a conversation about this, and apparently not everyone can do it. Is this a rare thing that only certain people can do? Can anyone explain the science of “chills” going down your spine to me? Is there a medical or scientific term for these spine chills?
The phenomenon begins with an area of the brain called the Rhomencephalon (or ‘hindbrain’). There is a condition known as Post-micturition convulsion syndrome which occurs after or during urination which seems to trigger this effect. It does appear to be under voluntary control in some people although it is not widely studied. I can speculate that it is a ‘mis-wiring’ of the brain which allows this function to be under your conscious control when it wouldn’t otherwise be. This shouldn’t be of any concern as I class it in the same class as things such as “photo-catylytic sneezing” – up to a third of people are said to sneeze often when entering light from a dark place and this is due to a slight ‘cross-wiring’ of the channels from the eye (via the supra-chaismatic nucleus) with the nose which ‘tricks’ the nose into sneezing. This is a loose analogy, but it seems possible.
