How do I make an infrared array?

I’m trying to make a IR array so I can have night vision on a camera for an RC plane. I’m using a web camera and just took the IR filter out of it, but I’m not much for electronics so I’m not sure what I need to do to build an array to make it work now.
Do I just use normal LED’s or are there special ones that I need to get?
And about the distance for viewing, the plane sometimes goes up to a 100 feet, is it possible to make an array that goes that far?
What’s the maximum voltage that I should be looking at if I’m using batteries?
And finally, what can I do to protect it? I assume that I’ll be putting them into a circuit board, so should I take any precautions to protect it like coverings, ect?

At high altitude you will not have sufficient
battery power to illuminate a full field of view,
so you may have to use a spot light. this will
require a reflector.

12V is popular because because of the large
amount of gear using that voltage. 12V battery
chargers are readily available. The size of
battery required will depend on the power of IR array,
light ‘ON’ time for the flight, and the ability of the
plane to carry the battery weight.

Practical total maximum wattage will probably be
around 100 Watts. So experiment with 30w and allow for
expansion. The whole experiment is a balancing act.

A really ambitious project would be to mount many IR
LEDs and reflectors flush with the crafts underside.
This would maintain a better aerodynamic and looking plane,
providing a good degree of protection and limiting
damage to a smaller area, as well as providing
easy replacement of individual lamps.
