There is however, a far more potent culprit which it is almost impossible to avoid and that is the House Dust Mite. Dust mites are tiny creatures (a member of the spider family) that are found anywhere that dust occurs, which, in a normal home is everywhere.

It is the aim of this article to outline a method whereby we target this tiny enemy and by eradicating it we can effectively prevent asthma attacks occurring.

These microscopic creatures feed on the particles of skin that we shed normally every day and although the dust mite itself is not a problem, the “droppings” that it produces, contain allergens that trigger a range of allergies and asthma in particular.

As already stated, Dust Mites are found all around the home with carpets and upholstery being favourite places. So it is important that carpets, curtains and upholstered furniture are vacuumed regularly but when the asthma sufferer is not in the vicinity, of course. Also, it is essential that you use a vacuum cleaner that is equipped with a special HEPA filter, specifically designed to retain over 99.9% of particles that pass through it. This prevents any of the dust mite detritus being simply recycled back into the atmosphere.

However, the highest concentration of dust mites is found in the place where you spend one third of your life – your bed. Dust mites thrive in the warm, dark, humid conditions that your bed provides and most particularly in the mattress. It is estimated that a double mattress will contain around two million dust mites plus their droppings, dead skin cells and the bacteria that are attracted to them.

While you are hopefully enjoying a good nights sleep, these unwanted, uninvited guests are having a riotous time eating, drinking and “doing what comes naturally”. Every time you turn in your sleep, you create a cloud of allergen-rich dust mite waste that you automatically breathe in. This is a critical situation for any asthma sufferer.

While you routinely clean almost everything in your home, including carpets and bedding how often do you clean your mattress? Even trying to clean a mattress using conventional means has little effect. The dust mites are adept at burrowing deep into the mattress and resisting any attempt to dislodge them.

So how can you effectively clean a mattress and prevent asthma attacks occurring at night?

Well you can simply employ the services of a company that offers a special mattress cleaning service. The actual cleaning operation consists basically of three stages

a) Deep cleaning with a high powered vacuum cleaner that is equipped with a HEPA filter. The vacuum usually has some means of creating a vibration that helps to break up the compressed detritus which has accumulated in your mattress.

b) The use of High Intensity ultra violet (UVC) light which destroys any remaining dust mites and the bacteria that are always associated with the dust mite and their detritus. So you end up with a sterile mattress.

c) The treatment normally ends with a spraying using a biological product that is perfectly harmless to humans and pets. This product helps to delay the re-infestation of your mattress by dust mites.

Even when such a service is carried out, it is inevitable that a mattress will become re-infested within about six months. It will therefore need to be re-serviced every six months in order to prevent asthma attacks or more frequently in the case of severe asthma attacks.

Alternatively, it is possible to carry out this treatment for yourself, as often as you need. Of course, you will have to purchase the specialized equipment necessary for carrying out the work effectively. However, the extra expense for purchasing this equipment will be offset by the savings that you make by not having to pay for the regular servicing and certainly more than offset by the relief that the asthma sufferer will undoubtedly experience.
