What kind of rug pad for use under the staircase runner?

The carpet that I am using for the runner of the ladder is Persian, as " luxury "(cutting mode stack). I recently had another wall wall carpet installed and will use the platform to the left on the carpet, but only is too thick! I am afraid it will give a "bubble" look. Is there a protocol?
