Reaction of hypochlorite and metabisulfite ?
Does anyone know the Redox reaction between the two compounds ? (in order to calculate the amount of sodium metabisulphite (anti chlor) needed to neutralise sodium hypochlorite).
I suspect the two relevant half-equations would be:
(S2O5)2- + 3H2O –> 2(SO4)2- + 6H+ + 4e
(ClO)- + 2H+ + 2e –> Cl- + H2O
Giving: (S2O5)2- + 2ClO- + H2O –> 2(SO4)2- + 2Cl- + 2H+
So 1 mole of metabisulphite to 2 moles of hypochlorite.
