Session of traditional healing Lomilomi in Maui, Hawaii

The Kahuna lomilomi were priests who practiced the healing arts with much reverence love and spirituality. They believed that physical discomfort and disease were the results of suppressed emotions, mental or spiritual disharmony.

The traditional lomilomi healing session began with extensive research on the nature of the dysfunction, as well as prayer, fasting and several sessions in the steam hut. Once the disease was identified, treatment often begin heated stones and herbal poultices. Kahuna massage is then and use particular lomilomi strokes necessary for that individual.

One of the common similarities among lomilomi practitioners of old was the power and knowledge they had. That is, their ability to communicate deep to the bones of their patients through their contact through the soft tissues, however, noninvasive, and it connects all with the spirit, says Maka'ala Yates, Hawaiian medicine specialist.

The lomilomi technique focused on finding congested areas in the body and dispersion of them by moving the palms, thumbs, knuckles and forearms in rhythmic movements, such as dance. Setting the intention for healing, The Kahuna also utilize prayer (polished), breath (ha) and energy (mana). The practice of lomilomi was common within each Hawaiian community and contributed a vibrant and healthy society.

Early visitors to Hawaii noticed and commented on this healing art. In 1803, Archibald Menzies wrote: "A number of Indians got around to lomilomi and pinch our members, an operation that is found on these occasions, very lulling and pleasing when gently out. "In 1819 a Frecient Sr., wrote:" Two women in their 40-year-old she knelt down on either side of me and squeezed and rubbed my limbs with all his might.

All body parts were pressed between his hands, from arms to legs and thighs to the shoulders. This is used as a means of making people sleepy. "

In the first missionaries in 1820, the islands of Hawaii are native healers to be accurate in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, and in repairing broken bones. Hawaiians considered the pagans, however, and in 1893, after years of political turmoil, the new government outlawed all spiritual traditions, including healing arts, the study of Hawaiian language and hula dancing.

But traditions sacred not die, but that is hidden and practiced in secret, is transmitted only within the Hawaiian community (ohana), through "iki maka maka lihilihi a alaw ", Meaning to do for the observation and introspection.

"It is correct to say that lomilomi includes a massage, but not limited to it. Native Hawaiians say the true definition of lomilomi is reconnecting with spirit. "

The tradition of "iki maka maka lihilihi a alawar" said in a report of the Board of Health in 1896 by Charles Peterson, MD, who wrote: "The practice of Kahunas (sic) in this district is, I am sure quietly on its business. Hawaiians do not expose them, and research causes only lies and claims of ignorance. Almost every group has its family Kahuna, and Honolulu provides more shrewd at times.

I have often met with the evidence of the presence of these workers mystery, and the circle on the sick bed noted the ease with which the power. However, no incentive will give knowledge of the proximity of it. The belief in the power of the Kahuna, but denied, is shared, I am positive, by all classes of Hawaiians, some whites, even. I'm sure they are allowing their ministry in their families. The opinion was nothing Hawaii proposed by the applicant, and at the same time continuing with his belief in his Kahuna and his ancient gods. "

It was not until the 1970 laws have changed and Hawaiians were free to pursue their native heritage and spiritual traditions without fear of punishment. This freedom rekindled a flame in the heart of many native peoples, and led to a resurgence of interest in their heritage.

over Hawaii were searched and questioned about their knowledge, and organizations base rose around them. In 1973, Aunt Margaret Machado, respected kupuna (elder) of the Big Island, decided to share the knowledge of his family by education to anyone who had a sincere desire to learn, Hawaii or not. He felt it was time for the healing gift of lomilomi to feel old around the world.

While Auntie Margaret was criticized by many in the Hawaiian community for revealing the secrets of lomilomi, it was through their efforts that lomilomi was brought to the forefront a resurgence of interest in Hawaiian healing.
