Grease As A Lubricant For Roller Bearings
All bearings need a lubricant in order to operate. A roller bearing is a bearing that uses a roller as the moving element inside of the bearing. Grease is a common lubricant to use especially in roller bearings. Grease is used in 90% of roller bearings. This makes it the most popular choice of lubricant for roller bearings over any other lubricant. Why is it so commonly used? Grease is very economical and it is easy to apply to the bearings, low cost and easy application, two winning factors.
What is grease? Grease is a thick fatty oil. If you have ever touched or felt grease it feels very slimy and it feels like a coating over your fingers but your fingers can still move freely with less friction between them. There are many different types of grease including silicone grease, fluoroether-based grease, laboratory grease, and water soluble grease. Different greases can be used as different lubricants depending on the job the bearing is being used for.
Grease Testing as a Lubricant for Bearings
We know that lubricants are exceptionally vital for the workings of a bearing and so the testing of these lubricants is important as well. Lubricants undergo a lot of testing before they are used and this testing involves: how corrosive resistant it is, the life span of the grease, how stable the lubricant will be in the machine, how much pressure the grease can handle, and how noisy the grease is when it is used as a lubricant. Certain machines or appliances need a low noise lubricant whereas in other machine this is not an important factor.
Where does the Grease go in the Roller Bearing?
The lubricant surrounds the roller bearings which allows it move without friction. Bearings have an inner and outer ring, the grease is filled in between these two rings. These two rings surround the rolling element, and so the roller or the ball depending on the type of bearing is protected. Placing the lubricant here means the lubricant is surrounding the rolling element which means it is not going to make direct contact with another piece of material which causes friction which causes the bearing to work slowly and can become damaged.
