Cat scratching problem?

My boyfriend and I just adopted our kitten-year-old Jed for a shelter that found him. Prior approval had been living alone in the wild. He has been scratching a lot, and has torn my boyfriends very expensive sofa. I am completely against declawing, but my boyfriend is getting very angry with me and Jed, and I desperately need a solution to its claw before my boyfriend said that declawing is the only solution. He has a great condo kitty, Cat scrapers he nails regularly, though he is young and likes to run around and everything just claw. We've also got a cover for the sofa, but their claws have scratched through it and ripped the leather sofa in the open. His nails are long, should I take him to the vet to get cut? It's a bit too scandalous for me to do it myself, because they can bite. HELP ?!?!??!?!?
