I tried to tip for a massage at a spa. She said no tipping but gifts were acceptable–what gifts?

I had a massage at a spa attached to an urgent care. The massage was great, but when I tried to include a tip, I was told no tipping and given a comment card to return. Then she stated, “But gifts are welcome.” What does that mean? I don’t know this person at all–how am I supposed to give a gift?

I’m not sure — perhaps she means gift cards or flowers or such. But you tried to tip, so you did your part — I certainly would not give a gift or anything else. Obviously there is a rule for the employees to not accept monetary gifts. The gratuity must be included in the price or is assumed by the employee’s hourly wage. So they are being well compensated. If you go to this same person routinely, then you might want to give a gift of some sort at holidays or at the end of your treatments or something like that. But for a one time deal or for just a few visits, I wouldn’t give a gift.
