About sewing machines. Can anyone tell me what a twin needle lever is for?

Its a pretty old Signature (heavy one). Does that mean there should be a place for two needles or is it like dual positions for the one needle. Maybe there is some attachment I should have? What does a twin needle lever do? It looks like it is just two positions for the lever.

Twin needles are for decorative sewing.
The needle itself slides into the existing needle slot,it has two needles but the top is a single piece. It’s very useful for double pin tucking, ribbon, lace, elastic and beading. I have several machines and sergers I love the double needles! It’s so much quicker when binding a quilt also. I’ve been sewing for about 40 years and I just love double needles!
